MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Multiple Sclerosis, a disease affecting the brain and spinal cord, that causes damage to the myelin sheath of nerve cells, disabling the cells' ability to function properly. The symptoms of MS can be extremely debilitating, and usually decrease a person's ability to move one or more parts of their body, along with loss of sensation. While there is no known cure for MS, Watrous PT has successfully worked with many MS patients to restore some sensation and enable increased range of movement.
Joint mobilization and the principles of movement developed by Milton Trager MD and other movement re-education techniques have achieved success in increasing mobility and sensation in the feet of some MS patients. This is supplemented by Strain/Counterstrain, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, and home exercises that emphasize body awareness to improve the gait. Afterwards, the action of lifting the foot in a heel-to-toe sequence can become easier and more natural for MS patients.
As always, each patient is evaluated and given treatment appropriate to individual needs.
